Title: Neurostimulation, nociception and pain: old remedies, new perspectives

Information:

The advent and refinement of neurostimulation approaches have led to enormous advances in neuroscience. These approaches, traditionally used to understand the functioning of the nervous system, have since been proposed as therapeutic avenues for many pathologies. Pain – in particular chronic pain – is a clear example of this, as neurostimulation has opened many windows on our understanding of the nervous system and proposed new approaches to improve the management of patients suffering from persistent pain. This lecture will address these elements, with a particular focus on the possibilities of multimodal approaches and personalized care.

Title: Rewriting pain

Information:Understanding the pathophysiology of chronic pain allows us to conceive of novel, promising, and possibly ground-breaking therapeutic approaches for this prevalent, difficult to treat condition. Reconsolidation therapy is one such approach. Developed as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, reconsolidation therapy aims to weaken the hyperactive neural connections encoding the excessive stress response triggered by the memory of the traumatic event. Chronic pain, originally thought to arise from persistent musculoskeletal injury, is now known to arise from… hyperactive neural connections that encode an excessive pain response triggered by certain movements. Therefore, reconsolidation therapy could plausibly benefit patients with chronic pain.

Title: Have you seen my shoulder!?

Information:We have known for many years the negative impact that an unfavorable diagnosis can have on the lives of patients. Moreover, these diagnoses often come with a whole series of prejudices and beliefs that can aggravate a patient’s situation, particularly in terms of pain. The particular case of the fear of moving will be illustrated in this presentation and avenues of reflection will be discussed as to its implication in chronic pain.
